Hello, I am a senior in high school who is applying to colleges. I am having trouble narrowing down a major. I am well aware that I do not have to declare my major immediately, but time does fly by so I would like to be thinking of it. Like many, I have always had the dream of studying space for a living.
Currently, I have narrowed it down to some sort of engineering, maybe mechanical engineering. My thought behind that is that if I major in mechanical engineering and possibly don't make it to the point where I can study space (e.g. NASA, Space X, etc…), then my degree is highly versitile and will allow me to still get a well paying job in the end. However, I can't seem to stop toying with the idea of astrophysics, or astronomy, or cosmology, as THAT is where my true heart lies. However, it seems to me that getting a job with those degrees are limited meaning if I am not able to get into the space industry, would I just be screwed?
I guess the ultimate question I am asking is: Is it wise to still follow my heart into astrophysics and such while risking the job market being small? Or just go into engineering with the hopes of space research but a larger job market to fall back on?
